Having worked with many classical singers, tabla players and other traditional masters of Indian music, I was very disappointed in this production. There was no time to learn about the people in the film, their training, experiences and performances, and the music exploration was extremely technical. While this would be good for a young student beginning to study this historical art form, for a non-Indian person interested in the music form it was overwhelming. I was also disappointed that I did not learn more about the people talking in the film.

Even those who already possess a deep appreciation of the power of music to uplift and transform will find Raga Unveiled: India’s Voice a great inspiration. Presentation of the developmental sweep of North Indian classical music and a primer on its structure and artistic intention provide the viewer with a basis for incorporating the masterful and breathtaking examples of dance, rhythm, melody, and song. Both the performances and the commentaries are awe-inspiring, and, armed with a basic understanding of the intention – far beyond enjoyment or amusement – the viewer is transported emotionally into a deeper state of understanding and appreciation. Despite its length Raga Unveiled is something one can continue to enjoy and learn from through many viewings. Even a single viewing will greatly enrich other exposure to Indian classical music and dance.
